Denzel is great, as always, and one of Oldman's specialties is the creepy villain. In a post-apocalyptic American setting, Eli (Denzel) is a badass drifter who crosses paths with a sleazy warlord named Carnegie(Oldman). It seems Eli is in possession of a book of great value, something Carnegie will stop at nothing to obtain. The action scenes are few and far netween, but they pack a hell of a punch. The rest of the film is filled with ghost world backdrops, degenerate villains, Denzel chewing up scenes like only he can, and a haunting score by Atticus Ross. Honestly, I'd recommend this film for the music alone.
There are a few humorous scenes to break the intensity, but for the most part the movie stays the course as a mystery thriller with a clever twist at the end. There are some cliches (the sidekick, played by Mila Kunis), and you certainly have to have your suspension of disbelief ready at times; but it's just a neat little film to fall into and enjoy. Check this one out, I think you'll be glad you did.
